### Women and Girls Kidnapped in Nigeria
### နိုင်ဂျီးရီးယားနိုင်ငံတွင် ပြန်ပေးဆွဲခံရသော အမျိုးသမီးများနှင့် မိန်းကလေးများ
The abduction of women and girls has been a serious feature of the conflict in northeastern Nigeria, particularly since the rise of **Boko Haram** in 2009. Human Rights Watch documented at least **500 women and girls abducted by Boko Haram between 2009 and 2014**, although the true number was likely higher. Women and girls were abducted from homes, villages, farms, roads, and schools.
One of the most internationally known cases was the **Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping** of April 2014.
#### 1. The Chibok schoolgirls — 2014
On the night of **14 April 2014**, Boko Haram militants attacked the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, and abducted **276 schoolgirls**.
According to Amnesty International, **at least 1,700 children were abducted from schools in 17 mass-abduction incidents between 2014 and 2024**. In the Chibok case, some girls escaped soon after the abduction, while others were subsequently rescued or released. Amnesty reported in April 2024 that **82 Chibok girls were still believed to be in captivity** at that time.
Former captives have described severe conditions, including forced marriage, domestic servitude, sexual violence, and forced religious practices. Human Rights Watch documented that some abducted women and girls were forced into marriages with Boko Haram fighters.
The kidnapping generated the international **#BringBackOurGirls** campaign.
#### 2. The Dapchi schoolgirls — 2018
On **19 February 2018**, militants belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a faction originating from Boko Haram, attacked the Government Girls' Science and Technical College in **Dapchi, Yobe State**.
About **110 schoolgirls were abducted**. Most were subsequently released, but **five girls reportedly died**, while **Leah Sharibu**, a Christian student, remained in captivity.
Leah Sharibu became particularly well known because reports from released classmates said that she refused to renounce Christianity. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom records her as having been detained by ISWAP since February 2018.
#### 3. Abduction as a method of coercion
The kidnapping of women and girls has served several purposes for armed groups. Documented cases include:
- forced marriage to fighters;
- sexual slavery and sexual violence;
- domestic labor such as cooking and fetching water;
- forced religious conversion;
- forced pregnancy and childbirth;
- use of women and girls in attacks, including suicide bombings; and
- ransom demands in some cases.
The United Nations has noted that reliable statistics for the total number of women and girls abducted in Nigeria are lacking, but described the available evidence as indicating that the numbers are **alarmingly high**.
### Important distinction
It is also important to distinguish **ideologically motivated abductions by Boko Haram/ISWAP** from the much broader problem of kidnapping for ransom in Nigeria. Armed criminal groups in various parts of the country also abduct women, men, and children for financial gain. Therefore, not every kidnapping of a Nigerian woman or girl is connected to religious extremism.
For historical study, the **Chibok and Dapchi cases** are particularly important because they illustrate how the abduction of female students became a major feature of the Boko Haram/ISWAP conflict.
If you are studying this subject further, **Human Rights Watch's report _“Those Terrible Weeks in Their Camp”: Boko Haram Violence against Women and Girls in Northeast Nigeria_** is a particularly useful primary research source because it contains interviews with former abductees and witnesses.
